The creator economy is the term used to describe the new career and business landscape made possible by the internet.

The creator economy enables individuals to:

  • Turn passion projects into sustainable incomes
  • Reach narrowly defined niche audiences from around the globe
  • Gain a greater degree of control over their creative and financial futures.

Creators are individuals who use internet tools and platforms to make new types of digital content.

As the world of social media and online creation developed, creators found ways to make money through their work (monetization), which led to the term creator economy.

Creators are the "adjacent businesses" made possible by the internet, along with the tools and platforms that support their work, much like the industries that came about because of automobiles. Hugo Amsellem of Creator Economy:

The creator economy remains strong because it's dominated by small businesses. These entrepreneurs go about their work quietly because they don't need big funding from venture capital firms, nor do they need big social media audiences that attract the big media coverage. Frankly, the state of the creator economy shouldn't really matter to the independent entrepreneur. They should care most about what their audience thinks about their topic because that's how you build a content business. Channing Allen of Indie Hackers:
